Fiberglass Deck Resurfacing & Reglass Restoration — Complete Membrane Renewal
Reglass restores the waterproof fiberglass layer when the existing membrane is beyond patch repair — widespread cracking, failed patches, or widespread substrate movement. We re-secure the plywood, correct drip edges and flashings, install new 2-oz fiberglass mat with resin, and finish with fresh textured gelcoat. The result is a reset membrane life, with recolor maintenance on a predictable cycle afterward.
When reglass is the right restoration
- ✓Widespread cracking or crazing in the gelcoat.
- ✓Multiple previous patches that are failing or telegraphing through.
- ✓Nail pops and open seams across the field.
- ✓Deteriorated drip edge or perimeter edge allowing water behind the fascia.
- ✓Missing or improper wall, door, or post flashings that must be corrected with the membrane.
Recolor (re-gelcoating) is for structurally sound decks with surface UV wear only. Reglass addresses the reinforced fiberglass membrane itself — when the waterproof layer or substrate prep requires renewal.
Professional reglass process
1. Protection and access
Property protection and safe access; railings removed when needed for full field work.
2. Structural and transition inspection
Soft spots, joists, posts, walls, and doors — full picture before membrane work.
3. Substrate repairs
Replace soft plywood, sister joists, and address rot to a sound base.
4. Pitch Verification (correction when applicable)
We verify the existing drainage slope is performing correctly. If the deck was originally built with the slope going the wrong direction, that becomes a separate Pitch Correction scope (full plywood demolition + sister joists + rebuild). Standard reglass does NOT modify pitch.
5. Plywood re-securing
Screws on manufacturer-spacing along joists to stop nail pops and movement.
6. Drip edge and perimeter
PVC/Azek drip edge; rebuild perimeter where the edge has failed.
7. Flashings
12" wall coverage, 6" post wraps, and door transitions brought to standard.
8. Surface grinding
Grind for bond; prep seams and inside corners.
9. Seam and fastener fill
Bondo or equivalent over screws and seams.
10. New fiberglass membrane
2-oz mat fully saturated — continuous layer over the field.
11. Post-cure prep
Grind fair; acetone wipe before gelcoat.
12. Marine gelcoat finish
Textured UV gelcoat; cure and final QA.
Timeline
Typical reglass projects: 4–7 days. After completion, plan recolor maintenance every 3–5 years depending on each deck’s exposure to sun, salt, and weather. A full reglass restoration is needed only when the membrane shows widespread compromise — there is no fixed calendar interval.
Maintenance intervals
- Recolor maintenance: recommended every 3–5 years depending on each deck's exposure to sun, salt, and weather.
- Reglass restoration: recommended when the membrane shows widespread compromise — timeline varies by exposure and use.
